ALBATRos

ALBATRos v1.0 is a Product Data Management tool with project-wide scope and advanced interactive features, specifically trailored to space projects, supporting System Engineering and Quality Assurance (QA) from the product’s requirement definition phase to the Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV).
It is a tool to centrally collect, search, edit and verify the product’s requirements, parts and properties including any relations inside the product tree as well as to documents, locations and people. The tool processes the information when required into formatted logs, lists, tables and typically required QA documents. Albatros allows this to be done through a single interface and in a highly automated manner. In this way, the project can maintain a design baseline consistent at all times, and available to the whole team. Albatros v1.0 is the ideal Product Data Management (PDM) tool for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). It includes requirements definition and verification, product tree generation, configuration item management, mass budget, trade-off traceability, highly automated project documentation, inventory and assembly control and many other features. Due to its unique architecture, Albatros supports teamwork in complex projects and allows to involve and guide the whole team through the system and quality aspects of a project.

The limitations of typical databases with static architecture are overcome in the following way:
  • Items are entered based on relationships with other items. In this way first of all a logical subsystem-based product tree is formed and dynamically maintained. The tree is the foundation for the project’s PDM in ALBATRos.
  • Other relationships are supported in parallel, allowing for powerful data processing capabilities and easy, intuitive data recovery.
  • There is intuitive accessibility by all project members through a single, web-based interface. Access level can be controller per user.
  • All project members can be involved in, and thus appreciate the system engineering and quality effort, without threatening consistency. The system engineers’ work can be reduced to data review rather than data entry.
  • Each project has unlimited users
  • The design is modular, and unused features can be configured to be not visible.
  • A single intuitive interface throughout the product lifecycle for all PDM activities.

  • Working with Albatros
Typically a project would start with a subsystem tree based on the conceptual design, to which in a next step, high level requirements, design documents and team responsibles can be related. As the project details and is reshaped, trade-offs are guided and made traceable by the system, saving valuable time when later in the project changes are introduced. The subsystem tree evolves and becomes a product tree, including the individual mechanical and electrical parts, harness, etc. These parts are related to the relevant subsystems. Lower level requirements and intended tests can be related to the parts. Documents such as the verification plan, list of materials, parts and mass budget are automatically produced at this point. Electrical systems are connected through harness items and signals assigned to pins. Harness production procedures are produced automatically. As the parts are produced, they are added to the inventory with their incoming inspection report. Test procedures and reports are linked to the tests that have been performed. The requirements can now be verified with a few clicks of the mouse. The verification document status is at all times accessible and an overview of open issues is easily retrieved. Assembly of parts is registered in near real-time and Albatros produces the manufacturing reports. Transportation of parts, boxes or assemblies is handled by the inventory system and pieces can easily be traced. At any time, a baseline can be defined and the status of all configuration items at this moment and changes since will be fully traceable. During the project, formal review procedures are supported, such as handling of RID’s, NCR’s etc.

ALBATRos is being released under a double licence; one for open source projects and one for commercial projects.
